022: Self-Care Tips for Podcasters During the Month of Love with Carli van Heerden

If you’re a podcast host, you’re probably in it for the long haul, and that means you need to take care of yourself! Joining Carli today is beloved in-house guest and resident Content Director at We Edit Podcasts, Jennay Horn, to share top self-care tips for podcasters in honor of Valentine’s Day.

Tuning in, you’ll hear some excellent recommendations to get into the Valentine’s Day mood, from our favorite rom-coms to the podcasts that are giving us life, along with some of the most valuable things we’ve learned when it comes to self-care and podcasting. We get into the importance of taking care of your mind and body, making time for things that bring you joy (which includes listening to podcasts!), plus a whole lot more. Remember: self-care isn’t selfish. It’s essential for sustained creativity and fulfillment in our craft. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Takeaways From This Episode:

Self-care means many things to different people. Whether it’s moving your body, spending time in nature, listening to an audiobook, or all of the above, be sure to treasure the little things that lift you up. Being mindful and appreciating everyday blessings is one of the best tools we have to help us cherish the journey and avoid burnout.

One of the most essential things you can do as a podcaster is take care of your body. That means prioritizing good sleep, getting the nutrition you need, and making sure that you’re drinking plenty of water. Talking into a mic is thirsty work!

We live in a distraction-filled world, and one of the kindest things you can do for your brain (and your productivity) is to create an environment that minimizes interruptions and allows you to get into a flow state. Try blocking out time for deep work. Not only will it help you create a distraction-free space, but it will also help you organize your time!

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Making time to do things that “fill your cup” is essential if you want to keep on thriving in the long run. Carve out space to do what brings you joy and spend time with loved ones. It’s an indispensable part of fueling your creativity and finding inspiration.

If you’re a podcaster, then there’s a good chance that you sometimes lose sight of what made you fall in love with podcasting in the first place. Remind yourself why you love what you do and plug into some podcasts that are pure fun!

A lot of us use the phrase “new year, new me” as a source of motivation and inspiration. This year, we’ve decided to shift into a different expression: New year, true me. It’s all about learning to appreciate who you are, getting comfortable in your own skin, and connecting with yourself, your values, and where you want to experience growth.

“For me, having my coffee in the morning all by myself recharges me for the day. If I don’t get it in, I just feel all out of whack.” — @carlivanheerden [0:07:09]

“You have to get great sleep. In our generation, who isn’t struggling with sleep? When you’re on your phone, or working through the night, or in different time zones – sleep [is essential for] fueling you in every way possible.” — @carlivanheerden [0:09:31]

“If you’re doing things to take care of yourself in your personal life, it’s going to just filter through to the rest of your work.” — @carlivanheerden [0:11:26]

“I am a sucker for comedy podcasts or people who are super funny. That’s where I get my fuel, especially because my life is so business-focused – Entertainment is what I love.” — @carlivanheerden [0:12:11]
