What the Remote Work Lifestyle Really Looks Like (And How to Thrive)

The remote work lifestyle sounds like a dream. You’ve seen the Reels. The ‘coffee in hand, laptop perched on a sunny balcony somewhere in Bali, delicious eats, and aesthetic workout outfits’. The big sell of no commute. No corporate kitchen politics. Just freedom, flexibility, and focus… right?

Well, kind of.

The remote lifestyle has exploded in popularity post-2020, with everyone from solo creatives to full-scale businesses ditching cubicles for cloud-based workflows. But here’s the thing: remote work isn’t just about working from wherever. It’s about working well from wherever.

And that takes more than an enviable desk setup and a strong Wi-Fi signal.

Why We Know a Thing or Two About the Remote Work Lifestyle

At We Edit Podcasts, we’ve been living the remote work lifestyle long before it was cool.

Back in 2015, we were just six people experimenting with a new kind of business model: one that didn’t require an office. Fast forward to today, and we’re a fully distributed team of 50+ talented humans working from 9 different countries. We’ve built an entire podcast production powerhouse remotely, complete with audio editors, video pros, writers, marketers, designers, and more.

So yeah. We’ve seen what works (and what doesn’t!) when you take your work beyond borders.

Here’s what we’ve learned about making the digital nomad lifestyle actually work.

1. Routine Beats Location

Everyone talks about where they work. Thailand! Portugal! That cute Airbnb with great views and mood lighting! But few talk about the systems that keep remote work, well, working.

Without a strong routine, the freedom can be your greatest downfall.

We can’t stress this enough. You need a routine if you want to succeed at the digital nomad life.

This doesn’t mean you have to stick to the typical “9-5, you do this first, then this” schedule. That’s the whole beauty of remote work, is you don’t have to do this. But, if you really look and your daily routine, you’ll be surprised at how much you still do based on a model that doesn’t’ really serve you.

But because you’re a remote worker, you actually have all these secret time windows that, when you see them opening up, you’ll be able to really create a routine that works for you and you’ll ramp up your productivity!

But, the point is that you need a routine!

So really look at your schedule, and build a routine that works for you. That’s where the remote worker magic really starts.

Pro Tip: Create a “ritualized start” to your workday – like a walk, journaling, or your first cup of coffee – to train your brain into focus mode.

2. Make Time Zones Work For You

Time zones and can be a hurdle when you have a global team. Even different locations within the same time zone can be challenge, as you can’t just “pop over to Bob’s cubicle” if you have a quick question. But the way we see them is that they’re really the catalyst for building great systems and communication channels between our team.

The key? Clear communication and the right tools.

We use:

  • Meet for walkthroughs, catch-ups, and meetings
  • Slack for conversations (with a dedicated channel for all those random “water cooler” type conversations, of course!)
  • Trello for task management
  • Google Docs and Notion for collaborative everything

Pro Tip: Treat time zones as relay points, not roadblocks. Set clear expectations, leave detailed updates, consistently update your files, and trust your team to carry the baton.

3. Burnout Looks Different Remotely

Spoiler: just because you’re remote doesn’t mean you’re relaxed.

Remote burnout can creep in disguised as:

  • “Just checking one more thing” at 10PM
  • Skipping lunch because you’re “in the zone”
  • Feeling isolated even when you’re “free”

We combat this by:

  • Encouraging actual time off
  • Prioritizing real breaks during the day
  • Creating dedicated time to check in with team members

Culture matters more when you’re remote, because you have to build it on purpose.

4. Digital Nomad ≠ Vacation Mode

Yes, you can work from a beach…but you probably shouldn’t work on the beach.

Being a digital nomad means planning for:

  • Reliable internet (always check upload speeds)
  • Time zone alignment with clients/teams
  • Making sure you’re “online” and available when you’re supposed to be
  • Clearly communicating with your team if and when something comes up that will affect your availability

We’ve found the best remote workers treat the freedom and travel opportunities as a perk, not a distraction.

5. Connection Is the Real Currency

One of the downsides to the remote work lifestyle is that it can be really isolated. You don’t just “bump into” people when you’re remote.

No water cooler convos. No casual hallway chats. No “let’s grab a quick drink and debrief” activities. So you have to be intentional about human connection.

At We Edit Podcasts, we:

  • Create communication channels for ‘non-work’ related chats
  • Have smaller catch-up sessions within the different teams
  • Aim for a once-a-year in-person meet-up

Remote life is only lonely if you let it be.

Final Thoughts: Remote Work Isn’t the Future. It’s Now.

The freedom to work from anywhere is more than a lifestyle flex. It’s a way to build global, diverse, resilient teams that are better at what they do. And the remote work lifestyle is pretty great…when you know how to do it right.

We Edit Podcasts is proof of that. From six people in 2015 to 50+ creatives spread across nine countries today, we’ve built a company not just remotely, but intentionally.

So if you’re looking to lean into the digital nomad lifestyle, just remember:

Remote work isn’t about escaping work. It’s about redesigning it to work for you.
